Nicolas sources from the Puligny side of this most iconic of Grand Crus. Reassuringly aloof and austere at this early stage, offering an initial glimpse of white peach and an exotic saffron note, before swiftly closing the curtains on the taster. Profoundly mineral on the finish, with that classic hazelnut note adding complexity. Incredible freshness here, and it will only become more profound with time in bottle

Maison Roche de Bellene is a distinguished négociant and winery based in Beaune, the heart of the Burgundy wine region in France. It was established in 2009 by Nicolas Potel, a well-respected figure in the Burgundian wine community. Nicolas comes from a winemaking family and brings a wealth of experience and a deep respect for the traditions of Burgundy to his enterprise.

Maison Roche de Bellene focuses on producing wines from carefully selected grapes sourced from various esteemed vineyards across Burgundy. The Maison is known for its commitment to quality and its emphasis on expressing the unique characteristics of each vineyard's terroir. This commitment is evident in their meticulous selection process for grapes and the traditional winemaking methods they employ.

The portfolio of Maison Roche de Bellene includes a wide range of Burgundy wines, from regional appellations to prestigious Grand Crus. Nicolas Potel is particularly noted for his ability to craft wines that reflect the nuances of each vintage, maintaining a natural balance and purity of flavor. The wines are typically marked by their elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Additionally, Maison Roche de Bellene has a unique collection known as the "Collection Bellenum." These are rare older vintages that Nicolas Potel has acquired from various cellars around Burgundy, which he reconditions and bottles under this special label. This initiative has been praised for offering wine enthusiasts the opportunity to experience mature Burgundy wines that are not often available in the market.

Overall, Maison Roche de Bellene is celebrated for blending traditional Burgundian craftsmanship with a modern approach to wine selection and aging, creating wines that are both expressive of their origins and appealing to contemporary palates.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.

Montrachet is one of the most prestigious and revered wine appellations in the world, located in the Burgundy region of France, specifically within the Côte de Beaune area. It straddles the villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. The appellation is exclusively devoted to white wines made from the Chardonnay grape.

The Montrachet vineyard is relatively small, covering approximately 8 hectares, but it produces wines that are considered the epitome of white Burgundy, commanding high prices and immense respect worldwide. The vineyard's location on a mid-slope with excellent exposure to the sun, coupled with a unique terroir characterized by a thin layer of soil over limestone, provides optimal conditions for growing Chardonnay grapes that express a remarkable intensity and complexity of flavors.

Montrachet wines are known for their extraordinary depth, power, and longevity. They typically display a rich bouquet of aromas, including almond, toast, butter, and honey, combined with a balanced acidity and a mineral backbone that reflects the limestone-rich soil. These wines are often described as having a perfect harmony between richness and elegance, with an ability to age gracefully for decades.

The wines from Montrachet are highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts, and they are often considered benchmarks for quality in white winemaking. The prestige of Montrachet is such that its name is shared by several other neighboring Grand Cru vineyards that include "Montrachet" in their names, such as Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and Chevalier-Montrachet, each producing wines with distinct but similarly high-quality profiles.
