Produced on 103 hectares, Chablis Grand Cru comes from the best exposed slopes of the right bank. The wines produced there show a higher quality than the other wines of Chablis. Rich, high aromatic persistence aromas of flowers and citrus fruits, they are characterised by a sharp character, due to the clay and stone, which distinguishes them from their rivals in the South. They also offer a mineral taste rarely equalled, thanks to the finesse expressed by Chardonnay on clay and limestone of Kimmeridgian. This is a brittle limestone composed of oyster shells and fossils. Moreover, their aging potential is impressive: they can be enjoyed up to 20, 30 years old or more. Very characteristic wine, with mineral nuances, loyal and fine.

One of the oldest and prestigious Burgundy domaines, Maison Régnard was established in 1860 by Zéphir Régnard, and is one of the only Chablis wineries that has all its cellars in the historic centre of the town. Bought by Baron Patrick de Ladoucette, of Loire winemaking fame, in 1984, the focus has since been on improving the style and typicity of the wines, which are now found on the best dining tables around the world.

The Maison produces seven of the Chablis Grand Cru (Les Clos, Bourgos, Blanchots, Grenouilles, Preuses, Valmur and Vaudésir), five Chablis Premier Cru (Fourchaume, Montmains, Vaillons, Montée de Tonnerre et Mont de Milieu) and a Chablis and Petit Chablis, as well as exceptional wines such as Le Grand Régnard.

Created in 1992, Le Grand Régnard is a special cuvée designed to reflect the truest expression of the Maison Régnard style each vintage. Similar to the Champagne model, Le Grand Régnard is a blend of 30-year-old vines, with fruit taken from the best parcels of Chablis. The wine is bottled in a traditional 17th century bottle to reflect those used by the ancestors of the family, with a distinctive and unique bulbous shape. A truly individual style of Chablis offering complexity and richness, whilst retaining bright acidity and the purest expression of fruit that the best parcels in the region have to offer.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.
