This is one of the icon wines of the appellation. The Il Marroneto 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie shows an elegantly streamlined appearance with shiny ruby highlights. This warm-vintage expression does not have the same vertical lift that we saw in the glorious 2016 edition, but that wine sets the bar very high (and it earned a 100-point score). This vintage is perhaps shapelier and more saturated with rose, wild cherry, peat moss and blood orange. The house style embraces extreme finesse, and you get that here. Alessandro Mori has also expertly managed the tannins, with results that appear silky and almost glossy. Thanks to elevation and soils, this cool growing site north of Montalcino village performs very nicely in the hot vintages such as this.
The Il Marroneto 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie creeps up on you slowly. Give this wine ample time to open and put on weight and volume. Or better yet just stick the bottle in your cellar for a few more years. Fruit comes from a 1.6-hectare parcel at 420 meters above sea level. This site, located just below the Madonna delle Grazie chapel, has sandy mineral-rich soils. This wine is very different from the Alessandro Mori's classic Brunello. Here, you get that beautiful purity in the bouquet, but you also get a different mouthfeel that is characterized by more structure and a firmer set of tannins. However, the overall integration is superior here considering that this wine is richer and has more material and overall density. Cherry, grenadine, and cassis are followed by jasmine and even a touch of exotic fruit. As the wine opens, you catch a hint of mesquite or hickory smoke.
Alessandro Mori is the Sangiovese whisperer: l'uomo che sussurrava il Sangiovese. I need to say it in Italian, too, because it sounds so beautiful. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna Delle Grazie is a phenomenal wine that speaks so highly of the potential of the mighty Tuscan grape, Sangiovese. This wine mirrors all the greatest attributes of the 100-point 2010 edition. Most significantly, it delivers profound purity and a most authentic varietal voice that sings both the high notes and the bass-baritone. First you have the wine's dark ruby appearance that is brilliant and vibrant but beautifully concentrated. Then you have the multilayered bouquet that skilfully presents ethereal notes of wild berry and grilled herb on first nose. Those lighter tones lift gracefully to reveal substantial aromas of dark fruit, spice, tobacco, and white truffle that form the wine's lasting aromatic core. The mouthfeel is feather light in texture, but don't underestimate its power or persistence. This is a true gem of Italian enology.

The Il Marroneto story began in 1974 when the Mori family started to make Brunello for fun and for the love of the wine. In time this “playing with wine” became more serious and Allessandro Mori decided to expand the cellars and pursue his love of winemaking, adopting a traditional and minimalist approach, producing wines that are 100% Sangiovese.

Do you have a favourite food and wine pairing with your Brunello? I love to drink a glass of good wine separate from food. Playing cards with my friends, watching a movie, reading a book…. I can enjoy all the pleasures that come from the glass. I love to think that my wine can be perfect for these moments of intimacy. - Alessandro Mori, Owner

Italy's most ancient wine region, Tuscany may not be a heavyweight in terms of quantity, but as the home of two of the country's most famous fine wines – Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino – it certainly holds its own in terms of quality. Tuscany's climate ranges from Mediterranean on the coast to continental deep in the Apennines. More than two thirds of the province is covered with hills, an important terroir factor in its fine wines.

Brunello di Montalcino is a red wine produced in the Tuscany region of Italy. It is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, which are grown in the hills surrounding the town of Montalcino. The wine is known for its rich, complex flavors and aromas, as well as its ability to age for many years.

The history of Brunello di Montalcino dates back to the 14th century, when the Sangiovese grape was first planted in the region. However, it was not until the mid-19th century that the wine began to gain recognition outside of the local area. In 1888, the first Brunello di Montalcino was bottled by Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, a local winemaker who is credited with creating the modern style of the wine.

Today, Brunello di Montalcino is produced by a number of different wineries in the region, each with their own unique style and approach. Some of the most well-known producers include Biondi-Santi, Il Poggione, and Banfi.

The production process for Brunello di Montalcino is highly regulated, with strict rules governing everything from the grape varieties used to the aging process. The grapes must be harvested by hand and fermented in stainless steel tanks before being aged in oak barrels for a minimum of two years. After this initial aging period, the wine is then aged in the bottle for an additional four months before being released for sale.

The resulting wine is a deep ruby red color, with aromas of red fruit, leather, and tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied and complex, with flavors of cherry, plum, and spice. The tannins are firm and well-structured, giving the wine a long, lingering finish.

Overall, Brunello di Montalcino is a wine that is highly prized by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Its rich history, complex flavors, and ability to age for many years make it a true gem of the Italian wine world.
