Lively, textured, with a beautiful golden yellow robe, it offers impressive aromas and new nuances with each new sip: ripe plum, figs, pears, acacia flowers, broom and wisteria, as well as notes of hazelnut. , honey and vanilla. On the palate it is dense and consistent, with a long fruity and spicy persistence. Without a doubt, a wine with class.
The Castello della Sala 2019 Cervaro della Sala relies on a time-honored formula in which the Grechetto grape adds vertical intensity and freshness and Chardonnay gives structure and sophistication. Indeed, Grechetto (with late-harvest clones) never goes above 10% of the blend, and no malolactic fermentation is performed on that variety in order to maintain its tonic and fresh personality. This stunning edition shows orchard fruit, honey and flinty notes. The Chardonnay ferments in neutral barrique from September to February, and fine-grained wood is prioritized to render a reductive winemaking technique to further preserve aromatic intensity. This mid-weight and age-worthy white is redolent of Golden Delicious apple, acacia flower and tropical fruit.
Compared to the 2017 vintage that shows a more accessible and full-bodied style, the 2018 Cervaro della Sala is a classic edition—it's about as classic as I have ever tasted this landmark white from Umbria to be. This cooler vintage prizes finesse and elegance, and those traits are matched by efforts in the winery to accomplish that same goal. On many levels, the 2018 vintage opens a new chapter for Cervaro della Sala, with a stronger emphasis on preserved lemon, crisp pear and crushed mineral. The wine offers beautiful freshness and linearity. I must also mention that this vintage is released while the fruit is still a bit closed or shy. That slightly reductive approach bodes very well for the wine's future evolution.
Thanks to the warm conditions of the vintage, the 2017 Cervaro della Sala takes us back to a time when this wine was denser, more extracted and packed with glycerin-rich fruit flavors like apricot and peach. Of course, the Antinori family has since moved beyond that style, most notably by tweaking the oak regime used on this wine. But the thickness and richness of the fruit in this dry and hot vintage takes us back in time with a hint of sweet nostalgia. This wine is fresh and spicy with stone fruit, mature apricot, honey, saffron and toasted almond. In a normal vintage, some 220,000 bottles are made, but production was lower in the 2017 vintage, resulting in 170,000 bottles instead.

Umbria is a region in central Italy that is known for its rich history and beautiful landscapes. The region is also home to some of the finest wines in Italy, including the famous Sagrantino di Montefalco.

The production of wine in Umbria dates back to ancient times, with the Etruscans being the first to cultivate grapes in the region. Today, Umbria is home to a number of different grape varieties, including Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sagrantino.

Sagrantino is the most famous wine produced in Umbria, and it is known for its deep, rich flavor and high tannin content. This wine is made from the Sagrantino grape, which is only grown in the Montefalco area of Umbria. Sagrantino di Montefalco is a DOCG wine, which means it is subject to strict production regulations to ensure its quality.

In addition to Sagrantino, Umbria is also known for its white wines, including Grechetto and Trebbiano Spoletino. These wines are crisp and refreshing, with notes of citrus and tropical fruit.

Overall, Umbria is a region that is rich in history and culture, and its wines are a reflection of this. Whether you are a fan of bold reds or crisp whites, there is something for everyone in Umbria's wine scene.
