The 2020 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance is golden, bright and vibrant. It offers a richly aromatic nose with flavors of Seville marmalade, quince, candied ginger and stone fruit. Inviting aromas of red apple and caramel followed by a delicate floral scent subtly develop. Fresh and lively, the mouth is ample, silky and textured. This legendary sweet wine can be enjoyed in its youth for its liveliness, but it can also age for decades.
Boasting a juicy and fruity nose, the 2017 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine is pale gold in the glass with a delightfully concentrated stone fruit essences that sway with elements of white peach, nectarine, dried apricot, apple and quince purée before notions of jasmine honeysuckle waft from the nose. Medium to full-bodied, the wine displays a succulent peach nectar flavor as it effortlessly glides across the mid-palate, flaunting with elegance and finesse. The juicy acidity framed with the layers of fruit and floral context leaves me just staring at my glass while the wine continues to evolve and unfold in the mouth. The wine coasts to an elongated finish that will have you picking your glass up again sooner than you know. Bravo!
Lucious tones of apricot, dried nectarine, honey and spiced orange syrup with subtle tones of cinnamon all beg for your attention on the nose of the 2016 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine. The wine is rich and dense on the palate, expanding and unfolding, showing layers of depth and breadth across the mid-palate. It's perfectly sweet with the precision and balance to counter the acidity, so you can continue to drink it throughout the night. The finish is long and thoughtful and continues to evolve on the palate, leaving a viscous layer, flopping back and forth between flavors of honey, orange marmalade and apricot paste. I see blue cheese or crème brûlée as a beautiful pairing for this wine.
Bright and gold in appearance with aromas of citrus marmalade and frangipani abundant on the nose. The palate is full bodied and complex. A good sugar to fruit ratio combined with a great acidity ensures the wine is in balance. The wine concludes with a long, spicy and grippy finish.
The 2013 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine was matured in 500-liter barrels for around 36 months. It has a beautiful bouquet with honey, quince, pressed yellow flowers and Mirabelle. It has wonderful definition and purity. The palate is very well balanced with a mellifluous texture and beautifully judged acidity as it just sashays along. It fans out on the finish with honey, quince, a touch of rhubarb and ginger, extraordinarily persistent in the mouth. Matthew Day, current winemaker, opined that he thought the 2012 would be the best ever, but the freshness might see it overtaken. This is awesome.
The 2012 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine delivers 160 grams per liter of residual sugar with a pH of 3.7 and, spent 28 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels. There is actually great similarity on the nose, perhaps a little more floral than the 2011 with mirabelle, and a touch of petrol infusing the honey and marmalade aromas. The palate is unctuous on the entry, nicely balanced as the acidity slices through the rich honeyed fruit that lingers long in the mouth, a touch of orange zest and nectarine towards the finish. I have a preference for this Vin de Constance over the 2012 - a superb dessert wine from Matthew Day.
