Deliciously fruit pinot noir with plum, dark cherry, anise, spice and nutty oak flavours among the more obvious descriptors. A dense wine with underlying power and obvious potential but dangerously drinkable now. This must be one of Marlborough’s most consistently top reds. And it’s organic.

Marlborough is blessed with one of the sunniest and driest climates in New Zealand. With easterly sea breezes and a long autumn, this region provides the perfect conditions for long slow ripening fruit. Home to New Zealand’s best Sauvignon Blanc and home to Dog Point.

Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturist and head winemaker of Cloudy Bay, began Dog point in 2002. As owners they have an incredible hands on approach to their wines - from in the vineyard, handpicking the grapes, to carrying out all the winery work. They apply old world philosophies and new world technology to produce wines true to their region.

“Our philosophy is to produce regionally distinctive wines that will drink well now and age gracefully for many years.” James Healy, Winemaker

Interview with Ivan Sutherland, Owner

What has been the most important moment in the history of Dog Point Vineyards?

It has to be when we decided to make wine under our own label in 2002.  The vineyard was already there as Dog Point.

What is you favourite food pairing with Section 94?

Enjoyed with a huge range of cuisine........seafood, Asian dishes, white meats, pasta. Most memorable probably an entrée with lunch that had fresh asparagus picked that morning infused with goats cheese matched to 2008 Section 94.

Marlborough is a wine region located in the northeast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is known for producing some of the world's best Sauvignon Blanc wines. The region has a cool climate with a long growing season, which allows the grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavors.

The history of winemaking in Marlborough dates back to the 1970s when the first commercial vineyards were planted. Since then, the region has grown rapidly, and today it is home to over 150 wineries.

The style of production in Marlborough is focused on Sauvignon Blanc, which accounts for over 80% of the region's wine production. The wines are known for their intense aromas of tropical fruits, citrus, and grassy notes. The region also produces some excellent Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling wines.

Marlborough's winemakers are committed to sustainable and organic farming practices, which help to preserve the region's unique terroir. The soils in Marlborough are predominantly alluvial, with a mix of gravel, sand, and clay. This soil type, combined with the cool climate, produces wines with a distinctive minerality and acidity.

Overall, Marlborough is a must-visit destination for wine lovers who appreciate the crisp, refreshing style of Sauvignon Blanc. The region's commitment to sustainable farming practices and its unique terroir make it a top producer of high-quality wines that are enjoyed around the world.
